We were on TV on Wed 2nd of May!

What do you know, sometimes a good deed does get noticed! Our descision to go off the plastic bags and use compostable ones instead has somehow gotten noticed by the FAIRGO team and we were interviewed for the show that aired Wednesday the 2nd of May at 7.30pm on TVOne. If you missed it, you can check it out here:

Paris Berlin bread now also on the North Shore!

From tomorrow, Friday the 20th of April onwards Farro Fresh, Constellation Drive, Albany and Farro Fresh, Lunn Avenue, Mt. Wellington will be stocking our breads! Initially it will be Fridays and Saturdays only and only a selection of our breads. However it's good news for all your North Shore cats, because now you can get it over your side for the first time too.

New bread weights and prices and no more plastic bags!

It's been a while since prices have changed in our shop. Although some raw ingredients prices have gone up, we have been able to absorb the cost increase. This is due to partly better purchasing prices for other products and increased efficiency in production. However to be efficient, we are going to streamline our bread weights so as to have only three different sizes (the only exception is the baguette, which has a traditional weight of 400g):

small = 500g

standard = 750g

large = 1000g

This means that some bread weights will go up some down, most will stay the same. The price changes are mostly beneficial to you – our trusted and valued customers - however in the case of the onionbread we did have to put the price up a notch. Please check out the table below to find out, if your personal favourite has changed:

So as you can see, mostly we are actually lowering our prices for you.

Howevethere is one thing that is going up in price …. It's plastic bags! Yes, we are going to charge for them from now on. Or rather we are ditching the old plastic bags and replacing them with fully compostable bags. The reason for this is that we have learned that the plastic bags we have been using – the “biodegradable” ones – are actually not really biodegradable. They are "oxo-degradable" meaning they are being manufactured with organic additives to polyethylene which allows them to fragment into little pieces (but note that the small pieces are themselves not biodegradable and thus this does not constitute true biodegredation). Since we feel that consumers (us included) are being mislead to believe that using these bags is better for the environment when all they do is leave very small bits of plastic that can't easily be seen, we have decided to use them no longer. If you would like some more information on this issue, you can find it on: http://www.smartpackaging.org.nz/ (click on compost).

So from now on, we will be selling the compostable singlet bags for $0.50 (we understand that is steep for a “plastic” bag, but that is how much they cost us, we are not making money on them). They are internationally certified as 100% compostable and are completely free of plastic and other contaminants. The benefits of using these new bags are a clean conscience, a cleaner environment, and a step in the direction of using less packaging and wildlife destroying plastic. Afterall it's about everyones future. Of course the best thing, is not to use any single use bags, but to keep a cotton reusable shopping bag in your car or handbag!

We hope you understand our reasoning. We are very keen on feedback regarding all the above issues, so please feel free to talk to us or email us your thoughts.

Thank you
